Devasted that Luljeta Nuzi has died after a long fight with cancer. An incredible, dynamic, fierce woman whose optimism and passion for equality for all, in education, as women, as members of refugee and global majority communities will remain an inspiration for those who met her. I first met Luljeta in 2009 when she came […]
Good Management for Out-of-school Settings
The purpose of this acclaimed course is to enable organisations to understand government requirements and prepare a comprehensive Good Management Pack for their supplementary school.
We are currently delivering the full course online using Zoom and Google Classroom. Call us to discuss your delivery requirements. Sessions can be delivered weekly or on consecutive days at times that suit your settings.
Next information and sign-up session – 11/3/21
From September we hope to be back delivering the course face-to-face as well and this works well across full days with 2-3 sessions per day. On both face-to-face and online courses we encourage settings to send 2-3 participants as appropriate.
The School Management Pack consists of
· A Welcome Pack for Parents
· Staff and Volunteer Handbook
· Management Committee Guide
· Safeguarding Policies and Procedures for all
Course content
Sessions 1 & 2 – prepare a Welcome Pack for Parents
Includes: registration, GDPR, e-safety, safeguarding statement, health and safety policies
Sessions 3 & 4 – prepare a Staff and Volunteer Handbook
Includes: safe recruitment, code of conduct for staff, e-safety; off-site procedures, protective measures
Sessions 5 & 6 – prepare a Management Committee Guide
Includes: mission and aims, responsibilities, child protection; risk assessment; training plans
Session 7 – presenting your complete Management Pack and preparing for quality recognition
The Good Management Pack can become the first step towards gaining the NRCSE Quality Mark.
The guidance given throughout the Good Management course is in line with criteria proposed by the Department for Education for keeping children safe practice in out of school settings. Where commissioned by local authorities we also tailor the course content to your own Section 11 requirements / local safeguarding procedures.
This course can also be purchased to support organisations offering out-of-school provision (core curriculum subjects, mother tongue/heritage language or faith tuition or a combination of these) in gaining the NRCSE Quality Mark. Supplementary schools offering core curriculum support may be eligible for a subsidised place through one of our trust-funded project. Please check with us.
All schools completing the course will be able to apply for quality-assured membership of NRCSE which includes a recognition meeting with educational and governance experts. Additional charges apply to complete this 360 deg process. Parents, funders and partners can be sure that supplementary schools with a Quality Mark award are offering safe and effective provision.

Deadline for registering for GCSE/A level with CLEx
CLEx (NRCSE Community Language Examination Centre) is open to entries from students attending any of our subscribing settings who are trying to find an examination centre for the following languages:
German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Biblical Hebrew, Chinese, Greek, Gujarati, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Urdu
We believe strongly that the best place for young people to enter a home/heritage language GCSE is through their mainstream schools if at all possible. Our Executive Director is happy to contact the headteacher/exams officer at their mainstream school if they need to be reassured. For Gujarati we recommend BAPS Swaminarayan, for Persian we recommend Rustam, for Russian we recommend Znaniye, for Polish we recommend the Polish Educational Society, for Greek we recommend getting touch with the Cyprus Educational Mission. For any information about CLEx please email us, or completed our preliminary registration form and we will get in touch. The closing date for registering with us at the normal fee of £140 for a GCSE is 12/3/21, £175 for A level. We may be able to accept late entries but they will cost more.
Re-opening and asymptomatic testing for supplementary school staff
We’ve had a lot of people asking about asymptomatic testing for supplementary schools and I will post the DfE’s answer with links below. Please do get in touch with Anne-Marie if you are struggling to access LFTs, she’s very approachable and replies promptly. But of course she can only deliver the guidance that the government provides.
Re: asymptomatic testing for supplementary schools
‘This is something we’ve been discussing with the central testing team within DfE for the past few weeks. For supplementary schools operating off a school site, the best route for now is likely to be community testing programmes. We have produced and shared guidance for LAs to help them provide a more accessible offer for out-of-school settings. However, if staff in supplementary schools are having trouble accessing these programmes, please do feed that back to us so we can try to work through any comms/ logistical issues with the testing team.’

More information on finding local community testing centres can be found here https://www.gov.uk/find-covid-19-lateral-flow-test-site
We will be covering how to keep your staff and pupils safe in our Covid19 Safe Re-opening webinars coming up on 10th and 24th March. Book your place here
Still time to enter your students for home/heritage language GCSEs and A levels
The NRCSE has established a Community Languages Examination Centre CLEx in partnership with the Turkish Language, Culture and Education Consortium, the British Council/QFI Arabic Language and Culture Programme and Pearson Edexcel.
CLEx will run for a trial period to enable young people who are learning Arabic, Turkish or other home/heritage languages in supplementary school or other out-of-school setting to receive a grade this summer even though exams have been cancelled.
Entry deadline is fast approaching! Ask your students to complete this registration form by 8th March latest and we will be in touch with them to confirm entry.
We will evaluate the success of the centre after July 2021 and consider the future. It remains our firm belief that young people should be entered for their home/heritage languages by their mainstream schools. We can not accept, however, that so many young people were denied entry in 2020 and are again finding it difficult to enter this summer.
For this reason we have established CLEx.
Result of the Ofqual public consultation are available here – Decisions on how GCSE, AS and A level grades will be determined in summer 2021 (publishing.service.gov.uk)
